Why We Give Presents

May 9th, 2011 Sarah Gadey

Gifts are a way of showing people that we remember them and care for them. For many people, giving gifts is a way to celebrate a special occasion with people they are close to and care about. When we give gifts, we bring joy and happiness to the receiver. And giving gifts also make us feel good because we made someone happy. When gift shopping, it really doesn't matter of the gifts are expensive or not, what truly matters is the love and the thought behind the gift.

What makes us give gifts?

1. Tradition - There are times of year where it is traditional to give gifts like Christmas, Valentine's or someone's wedding day.

2. Affirmation of Love - Gift giving is a form of affirmation to others that they are of value in our lives. Even when there is no occasion, we give gifts to show someone that they are appreciated and noticed. That their existence in our lives is being witnessed and valued.

3. Showing Off Skills - When we are skilled in a craft or an art, we love to give gifts that we have made ourselves. It is our way of showing that we put effort and love behind making that gift and that the receiver is very important to us.

4. Business Promotion - Business people and entrepreneurs love to give gifts that also promote their business. Companies give diaries that have their logos, pens, calendars, and other items that have their company name and logo.

5. Marking Milestones - We love to give gifts marking special times in people's lives like birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, christenings and baby showers.

6. Showing Appreciation for Efforts or Services Rendered - There are many companies that reward their employees with gifts to show their appreciation for the services those employees have rendered. People can give gifts to people who have made their lives easier like the babysitter, garbage man, the post man or the street sweeper.

7. Gifts as Donations - There are many people who give gifts for those less fortunate because there are times when charity may not be the easiest thing to accept for a person who is less fortunate. Gifts of food, clothes, toys, and other necessities show these people we care and we are respecting their dignity. Even if all we can give is our time and effort into volunteering in a soup kitchen, a church or a charitable organization, we are giving to those who have less than we do.

8. For Our Own Pleasure - Because giving can make people feel good, there are many people who give gifts because they enjoy doing it. They do not expect anything but seeing the happy faces of the recipient in return. They give because giving gives them pleasure.

Whichever reason you have for giving, gifts are always welcome. It does not matter if they are large or small, expensive or economical, what matters most is that there was love and thought behind it. We are giving because we want to show the person they matter and that they are thought of and cared for.
